Shane’s Interview Review
Jabe’s interview didn’t go smoothly at first, because he was struggling to run one of his applications. What I liked was how he problem-solved the issue while screen sharing with me in real time. He read the error, and instantly went to where it needed to be resolved.
One of the biggest things I look for is being able to solve a problem. We always run into coding issues, and what I liked most was his ability to find the issue, articulate the issue, and then change it.
While it was definitely unscripted, this off-course moment showed me the type of engineer he can be in a professional setting.
Jabe had a background in retail, and I think those years working in retail taught him to “think in big data” from the standpoint of inventory, prices, velocity, and sales.
Soft Skills:
In terms of people skills and meeting team chemistry, he’s easy and personable to talk to. He’s able to simply explain things, he asks questions that are relevant, and I think he’s going to be a good fit on a team. He’s open to learning more, and it’s clear that he sees himself as a student of data engineering.
